How to Detox your Mind

We normally think of going on a detox diet to remove harmful toxins that are caused by pollution and junk food. But there is another source of toxins that is not as widely known. Negative emotions and thoughts can lead to physical changes within us. Our own bodies can produce substances that, over time, can be harmful to our well-being. One of the primary causes of this is stress.

Stress is a general term that is used to describe a range of body reactions. When faced with a threat, our bodies release a powerful mixture of chemicals. These include adrenaline and cortisol, which prepare us for 'fight or flight'. This was very useful in prehistoric times if we had to deal with the prospect of coming face-to-face with a sabre-toothed tiger.

Now, our bodies still react in the same way, even though the stresses that we find ourselves under are not life-threatening. The same mixture of chemicals is released by things like worrying about being stuck in traffic, balancing work and family commitments and feeling like we have little control over our lives.

It is now being recognized that having our bodies on constant red alert can have serious consequences. Our immune systems can become depressed and physical symptoms like back pain, neck pain, headaches and disrupted periods can result.

When you are on a detox diet, an important element is to take some time out to look after yourself. You can treat yourself to some rest and relaxation time that will allow yourself to catch up. Some of the techniques that people have found useful include yoga, visualization techniques and meditation.

You can also simply treat yourself to a luxurious hot bath. Turn your bathroom into a spa by using wonderfully fragrant essential oils such as ylang-ylang, which is used by aromatherapists to lift the emotions. Complete the experience by having small candles or tea-lights around your bath.

By detoxing your mind you can make a real difference to your health. Even after your detox has finished you may like to continue using some of the techniques discussed to reduce your levels of stress.
